*The Irish place candles in hollowedout turnips to keep away spirits. Over time, people began using pumpkins instead.

*According to Hallmark, about 90% of American families (roughly 50 million people) participate in Halloween events each year.

*When people fled Ireland's potato famine during the 1840s and came to the United States, they brought with them their Halloween customs.

*For retailers, Halloween is a $7 billion industry, with $2 billion coming from the sale of candy.
